2025 Bookfest On Track to Be Largest In Its History
The Detroit Festival of Books, Michigan’s largest book festival, has expanded to nearly double its previous size, festival organizers announced today. Bookfest, set for Sunday, July 20, and now in its eighth year, has grown from its original and sole venue in Eastern Market’s Shed 5 to also include offerings under Sheds 6 and 4, and with additional vendors in tents in the areas adjoining those three sheds. There also will be numerous free children’s activities in DTE Plaza, the space between Shed 5 and Russell Street.
“We are delighted to feature 250 vendors, authors, and illustrators, offering books, antiquarian items, and historical memorabilia largely focusing on Detroit-area culture and history,” said Ryan M. Place, Bookfest’s founder and chairman. “Books, collectibles, delicious food, good vibes, and great music will surround our attendees.”
Admission at the event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is free. PBS’s national program “PBS Books,” which is produced in Detroit, will be featuring many Bookfest authors during its programming, and will also be streaming author panels at the first-ever “Bookfest at the Main.” “Bookfest at the Main” will occur two days before the annual festival, on Friday, July 18, at the Main Branch of the Detroit Public Library.
About Bookfest
Bookfest, now in its eighth year, has set a goal of collecting 2,000 donated children’s books at the July 20 festival, in conjunction with Detroit-based nonprofit Birdie’s Bookmobile. Attendees with the means to do so are encouraged to bring new and gently used children’s books and drop them in one of four bright-color receptacles stationed around the festival.
