Supporters of the Detroit Festival of Books have a new outlet for their excitement about this year’s eight-annual festival: pre-parties. The Bookfest experience is now extending from the traditional host of Eastern Market to several local venues as momentum starts growing for the festival.
“These pre-parties provide a space for people to connect and share their mutual love of books,” said Ryan M. Place, founder and chairman of Bookfest. “Our first event at Vesper Books and Wine on June 13 was a rousing success. We look forward to several more exciting events in the leadup to Bookfest.”
The festival will take place on Sunday, July 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Detroit’s Eastern Market. Admission is free for all attendees. The pre-parties include:
- Detroit City Distillery, July 3, 6 p.m. onward: The Tasting Room will have a tiki-themed pop-up throughout the evening serving fun Detroit Bookfest-themed drinks.
- Reading Rhythms at Roosevelt Park in Detroit, July 12, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Come read and mingle with bookish people at a beautiful Detroit park with the backdrop of the stunning Michigan Central Station. This event is outdoors.
One more note about Bookfest: Bookfest has set a goal of collecting 2,000 children’s books at the Sunday, July 20, event to promote literacy and reading in Detroit in partnership with Detroit nonprofit Birdie’s Bookmobile. Birdie’s Bookmobile has distributed more than 100,000 new and pre-loved books to children and families in partnership with police precincts, community organizations, and Metro Detroit public and charter schools.
